Chinese Scientists Successfully Teleported a Particle to Space

 

The experiment broke the previous distance record by more than three times.

When it comes to weird quantum effects, none is weirder than quantum teleportation. Scientists can—and have—used the unique and complicated physics of quantum mechanics to instantaneously teleport small particles across great distances. Now, a Chinese team has broken the distance record by teleporting particles to a satellite in space.

When we talk about teleportation, we should be clear about exactly what that means. Nobody's beaming people to space like in Star Trek. Instead, quantum teleportation is a complicated and delicate process involving sending information across space using entangled particles and reassembling it somewhere else.

The hardest part of quantum teleportation is the entanglement. When two particles are entangled, they're essentially 'in sync' with each other, and they'll stay in sync no matter how far apart they are. But if one of the particles hits something else—like the air, or a beam of light, or literally anything—then the entanglement could be broken.

Scientist Says Star Trek Teleportation For Humans Coming Within Decades

Theoretical physicist, professor Michio Kaku, says that a Star Trek-style teleportation device is scientifically possible – and what’s more it could be used by the general public within a matter of decades.

Dr. Kaku says he believes that the natural progression from teleporting molecules (which scientists have already successfully done) will be to and photons to a lunar base, before moving onto larger objects such as human beings.

Dailymail.co.uk reports:

During a recent Big Think interview, Dr Kaku said; ‘In the coming years we do expect to be able to teleport molecules, maybe water and carbon dioxide. After that, who knows? Maybe even DNA.’
However, critics have argued there are too many atoms in the human body to translate into physical data, then teleport and then rearrange in order.

There is also the argument that in order to transport a living object, it would have to effectively die and come back to life when the atoms are broken down and reassembled.

Mathematical breakthrough sets out rules for more effective teleportation

For the last ten years, theoretical physicists have shown that the intense connections generated between particles as established in the quantum law of 'entanglement' may hold the key to eventual teleportation of quantum information.

Now, for the first time, researchers have worked out how entanglement could be 'recycled' to increase the efficiency of these connections. Published in the journal Physical Review Letters, the result could conceivably take us a step closer to sci-fi style teleportation in the future, although this research is purely theoretical in nature.

The team have also devised a generalised form of teleportation, which allows for a wide variety of potential applications in quantum physics.

Once considered impossible, in 1993 a team of scientists calculated that teleportation could work in principle using quantum laws. Quantum teleportation harnesses the 'entanglement' law to transmit particle-sized bites of information across potentially vast distances in an instant.
