That time the US planned to nuke the moon

After the Soviets successfully launched Sputnik I, the US devised a plan to raise Americans' morale about the US' position in the space race. Called "A Study of Lunar Research Flights," or Project A119, the plan was to nuke the moon in order to create a massive explosion on the moon that would be visible to people on Earth. Carl Sagan was even brought in to work on it. The project was never put in to action, obviously, but make no mistake: Project A119 is a great example of just how terrible our governments can scheme.
