The newly found planet is believed to be eerily similar to Earth (with liquid water) and allegedly orbits the Star Proxima Centauri, our star’s nearest neighbour.
According to new claims from German newspaper Der Spiegel, experts are going to unveil the sensational discovery later this month.
It is believed that the Earth-like planet orbits its star just at the right distance and could favor the necessary conditions for life as we know it to exist.
The star system Proxima Centauri belongs to the Alpha Centauri system located a mere 4.2 light years from our Sun. The Proxima Centauri star system was spotted in 1915 and is one of the three stars in the Alpha Centauri system.
Reports from the Spiegel indicate the European Southern Observatory (ESO) will unveil the discovery of the new planet in the coming weeks.
When asked about the discovery, ESO spokesman Richard Hook commented that they were fully aware of the report, but refused to acknowledge or deny it.
“We are not making any comment,” he said.
Since Proxima Centauri is one of the closest star systems to our Sun, a planet orbiting the star would become the closest Earth-like planet to Earth. Even more exciting is the news that the new planet orbits its star within the habitable zone, meaning that there could be liquid water on its surface.
Der Spiegel is quoted citing anonymous sources: “…The still nameless planet is believed to be Earth-like and orbits at a distance to Proxima Centauri that could allow it to have liquid water on its surface – an essential requirement for the emergence of life… Never before have scientists discovered a second Earth that is so close by…” the magazine wrote.
According to Der Spiegel’s unnamed source, believed to be involved with the La Silla team who made the discovery: “Finding small celestial bodies is a lot of hard work,” the source was quoted as saying. “We were moving at the technically feasible limit of measurement.”
