Whales Are Dying In Mass - 337 Whales Beached in Largest Stranding Ever & Also 3 Whales Beached Off Coast of Canada & Blue Whale In Oregon - November 2015

The cause of the massive die-off, discovered in remote waters off Patagonia, Chile, is being investigated. Scientists say they are most likely sei whales, which are endangered.

The dead whales were first observed in Patagonia in June from the air, but now scientists are trying to figure out what killed them.

Scientists made a startling discovery on an observation flight over a remote fjord in southern Chile’s Patagonia: 337 dead whales. That is the biggest single whale stranding event known to science.

Because of the remoteness of the area and the roughness of the seas, scientists have not been able to examine the whales directly, but aerial and satellite photography identified 305 bodies and 32 skeletons in an area between the Gulf of Penas and Puerto Natales, toward the southern tip of the continent.

“CKNW News Talk 980, Nov 18, 2015 (emphasis added): The Department of Fisheries and Oceans is looking into the death of three fin whales near Bella Bella on BC’s central coast… Paul Cottrel with the DFO says a multiple death like this is extremely unusual. “We just get one or two a year, and usually never in the same area like this, or on the same beach which is even more rare. So that’s why it’s definitely a very unique situation.” He says all three whales were juvenile males, two of them likely younger than two-years-old… He says there were no bite marks on the carcasses, or any signs of boat strike either. Cottrel says the DFO conducted a necropsy, but found no obvious cause of death.

House Passes Bill To Audit Federal Reserve

 

In a 241-185 vote, the House passed a bill Thursday largely along party lines that would make major changes to the way the Federal Reserve operates in an attempt to create more transparency.

The Fed Oversight Reform and Modernization Act, spearheaded by Michigan Republican Rep. Bill Huizenga, would lift restrictions placed on the Government Accountability Office, enabling the agency to audit the central bank and narrowing its ability to provide emergency bailouts.

The legislation would also require the Fed to use a formula like the Taylor Rule, a tool used to calculate whether nominal interest rates should be changed, when making rate decisions.

“If the Federal Reserve explained to the public how it made its decisions, the American people would have greater confidence in them,” House Speaker Paul Ryan said in a statement after the vote.

“Families could better plan for the future, invest their money wisely, and create opportunity for all of us.”

Critics of the bill claim giving the GAO more access would subject the Fed to more public scrutiny, potentially leading to damaging effects on its ability to avert financial crises.
